Public Theater Case Study

PublicTheater.orgTheater lovers across the U.S. know The Joseph Papp Public Theater for its dedication to new theater works  and annual Shakespeare in Central Park festival. The Public Theater is an American legend that, despite its iconic status, continues to innovate; to make theater accessible to all audiences through educational and outreach programs; to offer a forum for the exchange of ideas and creativity, and to provide a showcase for both emerging and established writers.

Located within The Public Theater is Joe's Pub, a non-profit performance space that, since opening its doors in 1998, has become one of New York's hippest live-music venues. On any given night, music lovers can enjoy a set by either a promising new musician or a popular headliner. What's always guaranteed is a diversity of styles and sounds.

Why Soapbxx?
Soapbxx was asked to review and improve the Internet strategy across this family of seemingly disparate websites (The Public Theater, Joe's Pub and Shakespeare in the Park), each of which had its own needs and issues. What resulted was a massive feature overhaul that enabled the once unwieldy sites with a variety of multimedia, while allowing them to be entirely - and easily - maintainable. This involved:

  • integrating both websites with a Tessitura back-end box office system via API (application programming interface) to ensure that the front-office and back-office systems would work as one seamless unit, thereby rendering the data transfer of ticket sales information between the two systems unnecessary;
  • designing and adding an organization-wide navigational system to the bottom of every landing page that features each of the three Joseph Papp websites;
  • for JoesPub.com, building a radio player (in Flash) that automatically loads 40 music clips from upcoming shows, so visitors can then listen to samples and purchase tickets to the show(s) of their choice;
  • for JoesPub.com, designing video album and photo album libraries of all performances;
  • for JoesPub.com, constructing new community features, including a feedback feature in which visitors can leave comments about performers and their shows, which are then displayed on the home page.
